‘Inside Out’- soft and hard skills.

Soft skills- students work through a slides to analyse the main character Riley and how her emotions affect her then apply the same process to themselves.

Then, we watched Maximillian Park’s Ted talk and discussed it.

Then we prepared for writing a PERSUASIVE WRITING piece. The statement to agree/disagree with was ‘Emotional Intelligence should be taught in schools’.

Students researched some (given) sources , planned relevant quotes and summarised content. Then they planned their essay and drafted it. Once the draft was done, we looked at rhetoric. Once they had a grasp of that, they went back and tweaked their draft to be more formal and to add persuasive devices.

Reflection on Connections AS

Next time, I will expand on discussion of themes of text taught in class by giving students a list of detailed themes that they can select from. I didn’t think that ‘student selection’ could mean from a list- I interpreted it as they had to come up with their own. This will give a lot more direction and help ensure their theme/connection has sufficient depth for a high grade.

Waikato Uni’s new teach while you learn programme

New post grad programme where trainee teachers teach in school for a year and do their theory remotely. Hallelujah! The best way to learn how to teach is on the job. Cannot back this enough.

Lockdown round 2

I learned from the first lockdown that students need just one set of instructions they can follow for the week. At the beginning of the week I created an assignment called WEEK 5 WORK and on that uploaded a one page PDF sketchnote which showed what they needed to be working on for the week. Students have said this really helps and many printed off the sheet and put on their wall for quick reference.

Examples of Week assignment sheets:

‘Responding to the Fourth Industrial Revolution’.

“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn”

(Toffler, 1970).

I found this brief article a good reflection of our intentions for the 2020 integration. I teach a lot about the impact of the industrial revolution on literature and more recently, the technological revolution. I wonder what we will be saying in the future about the technological revolution’s impact on literature and society?
